NHS Fit Note Observatory

Compare what fit notes look like across England.

Work Health Lab calculates comparable shares from NHS England's electronic fit note data at Sub ICB level.

The research page is ready for data. The scheduled import will publish comparisons after it has processed the first NHS release.

Method

What these comparisons count.

These figures describe electronic fit notes issued through GP systems in England. They do not include every possible fit note.

Mental-health share

Mental and behavioural disorder fit notes divided by all diagnosis-coded fit notes in the same Sub ICB and month.

Long-duration share

Fit notes lasting five weeks or more divided by all fit notes with a duration category in the same Sub ICB and month.

May-be-fit share

Fit notes marked may be fit for work divided by notes with either may-be-fit or not-fit status in the same Sub ICB and month.

Important limits

NHS England records the GP practice that issued the note, not the patient's home address. The source covers computer-generated fit notes from GP systems and has known coverage and methodology limits.

These rankings are descriptive. They do not show that one area caused better or worse work-health outcomes.

Read the current NHS England publication and guidance before using the figures for formal analysis.
